Brain Nourishment

Translated by Parkson Wong

(Chinese version¡y¸É¸£»P¹Àø¹¸É¡zby Dr. Hung-Ying Shih was published on EHVA Newsletter (28), Dec. 2004)

Calming emotion (ning shen¹ç¯«) and improving cognition (yi zhi ¯q´¼) are two important aspects of mental health.  Ning shen deals with how one controls his/her emotion and yi zhi deals with how well one can concentrate, as well as analyze and solve problems.  These two aspects are interrelated and are both important to the well being of our mind.  Modern lifestyles are very stressful.  Everyone is extremely busy during the day.  In the work place, severe competition and tight schedules are common.  After a busy and stressful day, many people find it hard to fall asleep.  Even after fallen asleep, they are very easily awakened and have many dreams and nightmares.  People are not getting adequate rest because of their poor sleep quality. Without having enough rest at night, how can one concentrate and deal with the work pressure and stress during the day?  All this stress causes one to feel frightened and inadequate, causing one to have harder times falling asleep.  This starts a vicious cycle.  Eventually, both the body and mind will break down.  Finding ways to prevent, maintain, and improve the mental health becomes an urgent need for modern society.

Traditional Chinese medicine has accumulated a lot of experience in dealing with these problems and has developed many functional foods that can be beneficial to people's mental health.  Once we understand the basic concepts and the different terminologies, we could better utilizes these recipes and better enhance our mental health.

Heart and brain: a historical debate

Traditional Chinese medicine theory states that heart is the emperor of all the organs; it leads and controls all body and mind functions.  Besides the physiological function of the heart, thinking, memory, and emotion, are also functions of the heart.  When the heart stops pumping, all these functions will stop. A tradition Chinese medicine classic, <Nei Jing¤º¸g> states that ¡§the heart is in charge of mental activities,¡¨ and describes the heart ¡§as the foundation of life, that controls the mood changes, its health reflects on the face, and is closely related to blood circulation and pulse.¡¨ These descriptions represent the wisdom of ancient medical practitioners.  What <Nei Jing¤º¸g> has described as functions of the heart has gone beyond just the anatomical heart organ.  Over the years, this has puzzled and frustrated many of the Chinese doctors.  In Qing Dynasty, Wang Qing Ren ¤ý²M¥ôpublished in his book <Yi Lin Gai CuoÂåªL§ï¿ù> (medical views errata) and concludes that thinking and memories are functions of the brain.  Today we have a much better understanding of the different functions of the brain and the heart, and their close relations.  These understanding did not invalidate the theories of the traditional Chinese medicine; instead it shed new light on these ancient observations.

Brain Nourishment

Improving cognition and calming emotions are the two main goals of brain nourishment.  This article deals mainly with improving cognition.

  1. Nourish the brain to improve cognition: Memory is a function of the brain, so nourishing the brain can improve memory. Many Chinese medical classics have documented the excellent effects of  hu ma ren J³Â¤¯ on brain and spinal cord nourishment and can improve one's cognitive functions.  Many have also view that the ¡§du meridian¡¨ ·þ¯ß has close relationship to the spinal cord, so nourishing the ¡§du meridian¡¨ can also benefit the brain and its cognitive functions. Lu rong ³À¯ñ and gui jia Àt¥Ò belongs to this category.
  2. Nourish the heart to improve cognition:  because of the close relationship of the heart and the brain, nourishing the heart can also improve cognition.    Dong gui ·íÂk, shou wuº¯Q, and di huang¦a¶Àall benefit the heart.  Dang shenÄÒ°Ñ, huang qi ¶À¯Ï, and ren shen¤H°Ñbenefit the qi of the heart.  All these herbs are beneficial to the improvement of the cognitive functions.
  3. Nourish the kidney to improve cognition: <Nei Jing ¤º¸g> said, ¡§life begins with ¡§jing (essence of life)¡¨; ¡§jing¡¨ develops the brain¡¨.  Kidney is the reservoir for ¡§jing¡¨, so the development of the brain has close relationship to the kidney.  Foods that nourish the kidney will also benefit the cognitive functions, examples are rou cong rong ¦×çv»T, du zhong§ù¥ò, and gou qi ji ¬e§û¤l.
  4. Nourish the organs to improve cognition:  brain function is related to all five organs.  Fu ling Ó¬d, red date, and gui yuan®Û¶êstrengthen the spleen (pi) and nourish the brain.  Eyes, ears, nose and mouth are where the five organs interface with the outside world and are closely related to the functions of the brain.  Tong cao ³q¯ó improves memory, yuan zhi »·§Ó benefits cognitive functions, chong puÛu»Z improves circulation; they all benefit the eyes, ears, nose and mouth. Dan shen¤¦°Ñ improves circulation, benefits the heart and the brain. ¡ò    ( To be continued)
