The life style in Bay area is very intense and busy. In the long run, it will potentially cause emotional disturbance, having difficulty of sleeping at night, feeling of lack of energy, or catching cold frequently.
I am very lucky to have the opportunity attending the classes conducted by Dr. Shih during year 1996~97. He taught students on how to effectively taking care of your body and mind by ensuring yourself of having adequate exercise and balanced diet. By doing so, it is also a very effective way to relieve stress.
Initially, I thought it is impossible to take additional time out of my busy schedule to exercise and there are too many steps to remember. Therefore, I found so many reasons to discourage myself to follow the proper instructions. Luckily, there were practice sessions held on Sundays. Several volunteer assistants were there to help participants on how to exercise correctly. Every time after I attended these sessions, I felt very relaxed. My tolerance level was increased. I felt delightful being around my family and enjoyed my work.
I, then, religiously do the exercise almost everyday. I spend about 15 minutes in the morning, and focus on the exercises that I can comprehend, and suit my own needs.
My mind has gotten calmer every day, and I become a more rational person. Suddenly, I do not feel angry over small things. I developed the skill of understanding the cause-and effects: why people behaves the way they are, and why people makes decisions different from me.
When I am peaceful in handling the situations aroused around me, people involved in the circumstance become very reasonable. I, then, become more resourceful in handling the situations to everyone's satisfaction. I feel relieved and happy, and everyone surrounded me feels happy too.
My family life has been improved gradually. I used to have very high expectations of my family. It gives every family member very high pressure to perform to my standard. When they are unable to meet my expectations, I created very stressful atmosphere at home. When I recognized the situation and started to change it, smiles started to surface at home. Nothing is so serious, there are plenty of rooms for discussions.
Take good care of your mind and your body, doing exercise consistently has enhanced my life tremendously. I no longer suffer under the situation that I created in the first place. If I fall into the old habits, I am able to sense it and turn it around. May everyone appreciate this precious learning experience, and take it to the extreme to create your own happiness. ¡ò
Autumn functional food emphasis on nourish, its basic principle is "lubricate". Food that is too "hot" or too "cold" should be avoided.
¡° Sesame and Chinese bitter almond (Bei Xing Re¥_§ö¤¯) Porridge (lubricate lung, benefit kidney and lubricate colon)
Cook 1 Tbsp. of sesame powder, 1 Tbsp. of Bei Xing Yin powder and 1 cup of long grain brown rice in water over medium high heat for 20 minutes.
¡° White ear fungus(»È¦Õ), Bai Her(¦Ê¦X), and Yu Zhu(¥É¦Ë) Porridge (lubricate and nourish lung, eliminate dryness)
¡° Chuan Bei Mu (¤t¨©¥À) Porridge (elimiante phlegm, lubricate lung, eliminate mouth dryness by promoting siliva secretion, diminish dampness)
But first we need to consider our ability to digest the food. Take rice for example. There are the long grain, short grain and sticky varieties. Which is the easiest to digest? The answer is long grain. Short grain makes one feel stuffed quickly, while the sticky rice can create stomachache if eaten too much. The pain further decreases the digestion ability of the stomach, which in turn hurt can the body further. Sushi, although made of short grain rice, can occasionally be enjoyed because it contains Chinese daikon, which is a digestion aid. Therefore, to eat healthy one must also learn how to combine food to reduce digestion problems. Another example involves cooking techniques: deep-fry, stir-fry, and boiling. Which is the most difficult to digest? Deep-fried food is the most difficult to digest. Of course, deep-fried food taste better, but if we want to eat them, do not forget to eat some Chinese daikon also.
How about gluten products that are made to look like duck, chicken or other meat? They sure taste good. But they also are the most difficult to digest. Some people have major reactions when they eat gluten products. These items are increasingly being used in vegetarian dishes, so we should pay much attention when eating them.
How about dried bean curd and tofu? Which is easier to digest? Naturally, tofu is easier to digest. Some people get stomachache when they eat dried bean curd. This indicates limited digestion ability. Next question. Which is easier to digest: dried bean curd or solid concentrated soy bean milk? Typically, the longer it takes to cook something the harder it is to digest.
Finally, there are some food that look healthy but actually are not. Bean sprout, for example, tastes very good but the reaction is also very quick. First the stomach feel stuffed, then it produces gas. Bamboo shoots, especially the green ones, are also hard to digest and can damage the stomach. Other foods to take notice include summer fruits such as peaches, plum, almond and autumnal fruits such as apricot. They all taste very good but are harmful to our stomach.
The next set of problems we like to address is that of the cold-hot balance in food especially in the vegetarian diet. Most vegetables are classified as cold in traditional Chinese medicine which simply means that they slow the movement of the stomach and bowel. Some people feel good when they first started eating vegetarian food because the food contain lots of fiber and therefore is easy to expel. However, the body changes unknowingly. If we do not pay attention to the cold-hot balance, eventually the stomach becomes cold¡¨ and is unable to digest food at full capacity. Reduced digestion ability also reduces absorption ability and further changes our body.
Another set of problems involves the yin-yang nature of food. Some people say that vegetable taste yin. There is a wide variety of such food. Yin foods are not necessarily old¡¨ foods. Normally, people deal with the yin-yang problem by adding ginger, sweet basil, Szechuan pepper, clove, to yin foods. But how much should one put? Actually, the best way is to use vegetable themselves to balance the yin-yang without resort to spices. For example, most people think Chinese daikon is very cold. But it actually is yang in nature. Carrots however, are both cold and yin. Cabbage is another example of both cold and yin. Tomato however is yang. Thus we can see there are many ways to combine foods to balance the yin-yang nature of food.
As for spices, ginger, sweet basil, black pepper, chili pepper, clove are both hot and yang. Regular, red and Chinese onions are also hot in nature. Most pure vegetarians cannot use these spices. But some dishes do not taste good without them. What do we do? In these cases, we can use ginger as substitute. Other tasty yang substitutes are various Chinese mustard greens and pickled Chinese mustard green. Bean sprouts, soy bean sprouts are both yin foods. In fact, very few sprouts are yang. Most of them are yin. When combining foods, please first pay attention to the yin-yang problem and then consider the cold-hot nature. ¡ò
